Ixonos showcases visual search mobile applications on Android devices at Mobile World Congress 2011

Ixonos, a world leader in creating wireless technologies, software and solutions for mobile devices and services, is showcasing visual search enabled applications on Android devices at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 14-17 February 2011.

Visual Search™, developed by Cortexica Vision Systems, is a computer vision recognition platform which enables consumers to use their mobile devices to search for information by using images taken by their camera of a product or advertised image. The technology is based on principles derived from research into the human visual cortex paired with advanced visual recognition algorithms to determine and match with pictures in a database.

“Cortexica’s Visual Search platform is far superior and more robust than any similar application providing the potential for a viable interaction between physical product and online content”, explains Nigel Alexander, EMEA Sales Director, at Ixonos.

Ixonos has worked with Cortexica to port the application to Android and Symbian platforms. On top of the the technology integration, Ixonos can provide the 24/7 hosting platform for the image and information databases that the application utilizes.

An example of a visual search enabled application is the price comparison wine application, WINEfindr™. A person can take a picture of a wine bottle; the image is processed and compared against the database. When it is correctly identified, useful information about the wine is served back, along with the opportunity to rate it and share it in social networks. “What makes the application truly intelligent is that it can layer comparative pricing and location data against the object’s profile, and the application user can get instant price comparisons and the nearest stores at which the wine can be purchased”, Nigel Alexander explains.

During Mobile World Congress, Ixonos is demonstrating the visual search enabled price comparison wine application as well as a similar art recognition application on Android and Symbian -based mobile phones at the company’s booth #1E19 located in Hall 1.

Ixonos showcases an innovative Android solution with inspiring user experience at Mobile World Congress 2011

Ixonos, a world leader in creating wireless technologies, software and solutions for mobile devices and services, showcases its broad Android capabilities at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 14-17 February 2011.

Ixonos demonstrates an innovative Android-based multi-window solution, which runs on various popular hardware platforms. The solution is demonstrated on a tablet developed by Aava Mobile as a multi-window system, which enables the use of several applications simultaneously, for example the viewing of messages and calendar side by side.

“The multi-window solution brings Android user experience to a whole new level. Running the solution on a device with a 7-inch or bigger screen allows for new efficiency in handling daily tasks. The user can now see the whole workspace at one glance and run multiple applications at the same time”, explains Mr Vesa Metso, Director, Key Customer Accounts, Android, at Ixonos.

Ixonos has also made the multitasking user experience available on a dual-screen configuration. This takes multitasking use cases even further by enabling the device to be used like a laptop, with a touch pad QWERTY keyboard below the second activity window, or as a highly-advanced two-screen tablet, where both screens are used either for different activities or the activity is expanded across both screens.

“Multitasking is a functionality people expect from superior user experience and two-screen tablet devices are now debuting the market. With our solution, multitasking is the norm for tablets. Moving from one application to another is quick and easy, and the user can move applications or activities from one screen to another. This truly takes efficiency to new heights”, Mr. Metso adds.

The multitasking solution has been developed at Ixonos’ Android Competence Centres in Europe, demonstrating Ixonos’ deep know-how of Android components and modules.

Ixonos contributes to easy online welfare services for families with children for a nationwide project owned by city of Tampere

Ixonos has been selected to implement the entity of online services for the nationwide project Kohti kumppanuutta – lapsiperheiden rajattomat palvelut (Towards partnership — services without boundaries for families with children). The project, which the city of Tampere owns, is part of the KuntaIT development activities. Its goal is to improve the quality and accessibility of welfare services aimed at families with children.

“Ixonos’ participation in this project is a continuation of our long-term commitment to promote municipal e-services”, says Teppo Kuisma, head of Ixonos’ Business Solutions unit. “At the same time, we also continue our active openness by again using open source code, which has already proved to be a very useful basis for e-service architectures”, Mr Kuisma adds.

The Kohti kumppanuutta project aims to offer social, health and educational services for families with children and to do this seamlessly, through a single e-service. Online services are flexible and families receive better and more efficient service when providers have one-stop access to comprehensive service information covering the child’s childhood and adolescence.

“Improving the quality and accessibility of services aimed at families with children requires increased uniformity and openness in service provision. Unified service provision promises considerable cost savings for service providers as well as smooth, needs-oriented e-services for residents”, says Paula Vänninmaja, the project’s manager at the city of Tampere.

The Kohti kumppanuutta project was launched in December 2008. Its participants are the cities and regions of Tampere, Espoo, Kuopio, Lahti, Oulu and Salo as well as the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and the Ministry of Finance. The city of Tampere pilots the nationwide project.

Ixonos will deliver the e-service entity together with Arcusys Ltd. The technical realisation comprises the technical implementation of e-service processes as well as the integrations between the interface and the back-end systems. The e-service architecture uses products based on Intalio and JBoss open source code. In implementing the services, the principles of the enterprise architecture for the entire municipal sector will be used, as will the SOA (service-oriented architecture) platform that Ixonos previously implemented for the city of Tampere.

The three parties — the city of Tampere, Ixonos and Arcusys — will sign the co-operation agreement on 1 February 2011.
